Event Details

Back in 2015, a bunch of renegade artists and adventurous party people decided to take their show to the Source of the Nile and call it “NYEGE NYEGE FESTIVAL”, a surprising name to Kiswahili speakers, who eventually found out that in Luganda, the word carries a very different meaning:

“The irresistible urge to DANCE”.

The festival came out of our common efforts to put new East African sounds on the map: Benga, Acholitronix, Singeli, Kadodi, EA Wave, Shrap, Kinyatrap, Kenyan metal and many more would share the spotlight year after year along traditional musicians and contemporary sounds form all over the Continent (Kuduro, Chaabi, Balani, Gqom, Afrohouse, Coupé-décalé, Soukous and so many more). Tooo much great music, yet not enough opportunities to see them all live, let alone over 4 days. So the festival, our community studio in Kampala and two record labels (Hakuna Kulala & Nyege Tapes) were set up to change that, and give underground artists a chance to blow up.

Today we have over 20 Ugandan, Tanzanian and Kenyan artists touring worldwide: representing East Africa across the world. NYEGE NYEGE promises to continue to work towards a festival that is a catalyst for the abundance of talent around us, and continue to bring the spotlight to the East African Creative Spirit.

In 2015 there were no sponsors, no LED lights, no secret stages and fancy soundsystems, no wifi or tanzanian twerkers or Boiler Room streams…But a thousand friends sparked off the first Nyege Nyege, dancing in the rain and in the mud, not giving a fuck, everyone feeling free and together… and amidst all the imperfections, we felt like we could do anything and be anyone.

That’s the spirit that has brought people together year after year, and made Ugandans the proud host of East Africa’s wildest party….

Today the festival has grown to over 300 performers over 6 stages, and this year we are literally going all out to bring you the most exciting and ambitious edition to date.

Last year there were a few extra hurdles, and with the festival getting bigger, we felt it was really important to write this long ass blurb, so for you that will attend for the first time, fear not, you will feel at home wherever you come from, come and be yourself, and be part of the experience.

And to you, seasoned Nyegerian, we look so much forward to celebrate this 6th anniversary together, and to continue to surprise you and make you proud of what we become. Just wait till you see the extraordinary line up that’s coming your way, saucy af.

With the support of the Ministry of Tourism, we know this year will be flawless 😉

Sorry for the long ass blurb, but it’s good to remember why we do this after all…. Don’t forget to book your tickets early so they are cheaper, and to tell your boss your taking leave to attend to your Nyege duties from early September .

For any info just contact us here and we’ll make sure to be as responsive as possible.

One Love to all of you crazy ones out there, see you in September 5-6-7-8 yaaaaaaaaa!!!
